Gossip: Man United have £50m central defender bid rejected

Every time that you hear a rumour about Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid, the automatic response is to ignore it. We have been here far too many times before, the media used as bait by club, player or agent.

Maybe that’s exactly what is happening again, but this time it does feel a little different. On Wednesday morning, the Daily Mirror run with the details of Ronaldo’s potential move to Juventus. More than ever, he could be leaving Real Madrid.

Those details, then. The Mirror say that Juventus believe a fee of £88m will be enough to persuade Real to sell, given Ronaldo’s age. They also – and this is the crucial bit – say that Juventus are prepared to offer Ronaldo £26.5m a year as a salary. That’s an increase of £8m on his current wage.

The Mirror quote a source as saying that Juventus are ‘95 per cent’ confident of doing a deal, but let’s also be aware that Jorge Mendes could be trying to force an auction or Real Madrid’s hand. Believe it when you see him in the black-and-white shirt.

Interesting line in the Independent, who say that Arsenal are interested in signing Andre Gomes from Barcelona. It has really not gone well for Gomes at the Camp Nou.

Miguel Delaney writes that Unai Emery believes Gomes could be an excellent fit for Arsenal’s midfield, and Emery believes that a bid of £30m could do the trick.

Interestingly given the talk of Lucas Torreira joining from Sampdoria, we are also told that Emery is so keen on Gomes that he could sacrifice the club’s interest in other players.

Another day, another central defender being linked to Manchester United for a whacking great fee. Il Corriere dello Sport say that United have had a £50m bid rejected for Milan central defender Alessandro Romagnoli, and that United must up their bid if they want to get a deal done.

However, the report also says that Milan are willing to sell Romagnoli if a bid comes in that they think represents good value. Milan are in some degree of financial worry, having been barred from European football next season.

It’s clear that United are going to buy another centre-back, but their options aren’t shocky. Eric Bailly is considered to be the best central defender at the club, and Victor Lindelof has been excellent at this World Cup. Add in Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo as back-up, and it isn’t that bad is it?

Chelsea are in talks to sign CSKA Moscow midfielder Aleksandr Golovin, Juventus defender Daniele Rugani and Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker… Sunderland pair Didier Ndong and Papy Djilobodji have failed to report for pre-season training… Luke Shaw has returned to Manchester United early to train alone… Everton are close to signing Rennes defender Ramy Bensebaini.
