Milner beats new man Keita in Liverpool fitness test

James ‘The Machine’ Milner was the last man standing in a ‘lactate threshold test’ that involved running laps off the pitch within a certain time as Liverpool’s players returned to training.

New signing Naby Keita is almost ten years younger than the 32-year-old James Milner, but he has the serious disadvantage of not being from Yorkshire.

Those Liverpool players not at the World Cup returned to training on Monday, with Keita working at Melwood for the first time.

He was firmly put in his place by the old men of Liverpool, with Adam Lallana (30) and Milner the last men standing.

Boss Jurgen Klopp said: “The first day is a testing day so the boys have to show how they worked through the summer period. I had a rest apart from being on the telephone for plenty of hours, but the boys will obviously have a programme – and if they did it the tests will be good and we won’t have to do that much physical work, but if they didn’t it will be a little bit more intense!”
