Manchester United’s negotiations with Tottenham over a deal for Toby Alderweireld are reported to have stalled.
The Spurs centre-half is wanted by Jose Mourinho to strengthen the core of his defence, while Alderweireld appears reluctant to sign a new deal at White Hart Lane.
The Belgium international is under contract until 2020 but those terms contain a clause meaning he can leave for £25million next year.
United can offer a salary far in excess of the £120,000 a week that Spurs have put on the table, and the north London side are said to be willing to cash in this summer before losing the 29-year-old on the cheap in 12 months.
The Red Devils are understood to be willing to offer £55million but the Evening Standard is reporting that talks have reached an impasse, with Spurs looking for a bigger fee.
Anthony Martial could become a factor in the negotiations, with Spurs keen on the Frenchman who has fallen out of favour with Mourinho at Old Trafford.
